Getting the bed right before the turf goes down
Turf underlay is the layer the turf roots into. It is spread and levelled over the prepared area so the turf sits on an even bed, rather than on uneven existing soil, rubble or clay.
The depth you need depends on what is already there and on the turf you are laying. Rather than quoting a blanket depth, measure your lawn area and the depth you have been given, and use the calculator below to get cubic metres — we will confirm the tonnage from those figures.
Turf underlay is different from garden mix and topsoil: garden mix is blended for planting beds, and topsoil is used for filling and lawn preparation more generally.
